FLA to launch Full Enforcement Campaign for the New Year
KINGSTON, Jamaica: Since June 2017, the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) has been conducting a series of compliance and enforcement drives geared at achieving full compliance of licensed firearm holders.
Following this, the FLA is advising that as of Thursday, January 3, 2019, the Authority will commence a full enforcement drive in accordance with the law. This enforcement drive will see the FLA providing the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) with the list of licence holders who have not renewed their licences for years; to have these persons charged under the provisions of the Firearms Act. The law requires all firearm licences to be renewed annually, with rounds accounted for and weapons inspected, failing to do so carries a penalty of up to twelve months’ imprisonment or a fine of Two Hundred Thousand Dollars ($200,000).
The Authority has also begun discussions with the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) to implement a system where an alert will be placed at all airports on delinquent licence holders who are leaving the island.
The FLA would like to stress the importance of compliance of all licensed firearm holders as owning a licensed firearm is a serious responsibility and must be treated as such.
The Authority promotes firearm safety and responsibility, and as such, urges licensed firearm holders to, at all times, be compliant and submit to the law, rules and regulations governing the issuance of their licences.
The Authority encourages all delinquent firearm licence holders to make themselves compliant before Thursday, January 3, 2019, so as to avoid any possible consequence under the law. The Authority believes that licensed firearm holders must exhibit great responsibility in the safe use and handling of their firearms, and at all times respect and uphold the law.
